Madeleine Marecot & Louis Martineau

Marie-Madeleine Marecot

Marie-Madeleine Marecot was the daughter of Mathurin-Marguerin Marecot and Marie Argnaude. She was born around 1636 in the Notre-Dame-de-Cogne parish or La Rochelle, France.

Madeleine Marecot was born around 1634 in Bourg-De-Dales, La Rochelle, Aunis, France, the daughter of Mathurine Marecot and Marie Regnau. She arrived in the Quebec Colony as a Filles à Marier (marriageable girl), contracted to be the bride of Louis Martineau. They were married on April 9, 1663, in Château-Richer, Quebec.[1]

Marie-Madeleine came to Quebec as a Filles à Marier and married Louis Martineau on April 9, 1663, in Château-Richer. They had the following children (verified with PRDH):

  1. Jean Martineau — Born on July 24, 1664, and died shortly after on August 8, 1664, in Château-Richer.[2]
  2. Elisabeth Martineau — Born on March 16, 1668, and died on December 20, 1685, in the Parish of Ste-Famille on Île d’Orléans. She married Jean-Pierre Dubreuil.[2:1]
  3. Augustin-Pierre Martineau — Born on April 13, 1669, in Ste-Famille and died at an unknown date in St. Francois. He married Marie-Madeleine Leblond, and the couple had fourteen children.[2:2]

Elisabeth Martineau was buried on the same day she died, December 20, 1685.

Louis Martineau

Louis Martineau was born on August 25, 1624, in the Parish of St-Savinien, La Rochelle, Charente-Maritime, France. He was the son of Jean Martineau and Mathurine Bonne. Louis and Madeleine had three children together. Madeleine died on September 17, 1698, at Hôtel-Dieu in Ville de Québec, and Louis passed away on May 28, 1709, in St. Francois, Île d’Orléans.[1:1]

Louis married Madeleine Marecot at Château-Richer in Nouvelle-France on April 9, 1663.[1:2]

An excerpt from the baptism, marriage, and burial records of the Parish of Château-Richer (La Visitation de Notre Dame) reads:

“On the ninth day of April in the year 1663, after the betrothal and the publication of the banns of marriage between Louis Martineau, a laborer from the diocese of Saintes, and Madeleine Marecot, native of the parish of Ballon in the diocese of La Rochelle, the first bann was read on Low Sunday (Quasimodo), the second on the day of the Annunciation of the Holy Virgin, and the last on the following Sunday, and no impediments having been found, I married them according to the form prescribed by the Church in the presence of Mac. Cochon, Jean Premont, Master Claude Auber, and Jean Plante, who declared that they knew of no impediment.”

A marriage contract was notarized by Claude Aubert on March 1, 1663. Research Note: Easter in 1663, according to the Western Calendar, fell on March 25. The banns were read on April 1 (Low Sunday), April 8, and April 15. No impediments were noted, and all paperwork was completed, so it was notarized that they were free to marry.

Louis Martineau was buried at Saint-François, Île-d’Orléans, in Nouvelle-France on May 28, 1709.[1:3]
